DVT Ultrasound

Ultrasound Team

DVT (deep vein thrombosis) is a serious medical condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in the deep veins, usually in the legs or pelvis, leading to either partially or completely blocked venous circulation. The condition can result in serious health complications, such as a pulmonary embolism, which can result in death.

Who is at risk?

Up to 2 million Americans suffer from DVT each year. There are more DVT related deaths than breast cancer. Some risk factors include:

  • Prolonged sitting
  • Acute medical illness with bed rest
  • Obesity
  • Cancer
  • Inherited predisposition to clotting
  • Certain heart diseases
  • Advanced age
  • Pregnancy
  • Recent surgery
  • The use of medications with hormones such as birth control pills

What are the symptoms of deep vein thrombosis?

While DVT’s are common they are sometimes overlooked. A simple ultrasound is used to detect a DVT. Symptoms of DVT may include pain, tenderness, redness and discoloration.

Both our Morganton and Lincolnton locations offer DVT Ultrasounds.
