A mammogram is a low-dose x-ray screening of the breast. It is the most valuable tool in early detection of breast cancer. A mammogram allows your doctor to identify breast cancer before a lump or mass can even be felt. The earlier the detection, the more treatment options you may have available to you, and the better your chance to survive cancer.

What is a Diagnostic Mammogram?

A diagnostic mammogram is different than a regular screening mammogram. This examination is used to check for breast cancer after a lump or other symptom has been found. It may also be used to further evaluate changes found during a screening mammogram or when a patient has special circumstances such as the presence of breast implants. The procedure may take a little longer than a screening mammogram as the technologist may take additional x-rays, including images of magnified areas. The results are more detailed pictures that allow the radiologist to make a more accurate diagnosis.

How is a mammogram performed?

The procedure involves one x-ray from the side of the breast and one from the top. The breast is compressed for the duration of the x-ray to improve the image, but it only takes a few seconds. A female registered radiologic technologist performs the exam.

What is digital mammography?

Blue Ridge Radiolgoy is proud to offer digital mammography since 2005. Digital mammography is the most current technological advancement in mammogram screening. While the patient’s experience is very similar to that experienced with previous technology, how the images are captured lets your doctor focus more on areas of concern. Digital mammography has been shown to reduce the amount of radiation received during an exam by 40 percent, while finding 28 percent more cancers in women.

What is Breast MRI?

Blue Ridge Radiology offers the very best in diagnostic and early detection tools to help with early detection of breast cancer. Since 2005 we have offered Breast MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) in addition to mammography for the women who need it.  Breast MRI provides exceptionally sensitive image quality. While not for everyone, Breast MRI can make all the difference for women with a high risk of breast cancer. To determine your lifetime risk of breast cancer, go to www.cancer.gov/bcrisktool and answer the questions. If your lifetime risk is greater than 20%, the American Cancer Society has recommended that you be screened for breast cancer with a yearly mammogram and a yearly Breast MRI. We encourage you to talk to your physician for more information.
