Preparing for an IVP

How Should I Prepare for an IVP?

You will need to come by the office and pick up a prep kit and detailed instruction on how to cleanse the colon. You need to have nothing to eat or drink after midnight.

What Should I Expect?

You will be asked to change into a gown and a detailed history will be taken. You will them be injected with a contrast medium. After the contrast is injected into your vein, you may feel a slight warm flush or notice a metallic taste in your mouth. These sensations will pass rapidly. The technologist will take x-rays quickly in order to capture the contrast as it moves through the urinary system. The radiologist will view the images as the technologist takes them. At the end of the exam you will be allowed to go the rest room and empty your bladder, after that one more x-ray will be taken.
