Preparing for a Barium Enema Exam
How should I prepare for a Barium Enema Exam?
For a Barium Enema, the preparation consists of 1 packet of Magnesium Carbonate, 4 Bisacodyl tablets and 1 suppository. You will need to come by our office and pick up this prep kit and instructions at least 2 days before your exam. There are detailed instructions in the kit to follow. The day of the exam, do not eat or drink anything for breakfast. Upon arising, you will need to insert the suppository into the rectum and leave in for at least 15 minutes if possible.
What should I expect?
Barium Sulfate is introduced into the colon through a narrow tube placed into your rectum. Air is often put into the colon through the same tube ( this is known as an Air Contrast Barium Enema). The barium outlines the interior surface of the colon. While the colon is being filled, the radiologist watches on a video monitor and takes x-ray images with a fluoroscopic machine. You will be asked to move into different positions to reveal all the parts of your colon on the x-rays. After your colon is full the technologist also will take additional x-rays. Your colon will feel very full at this point, and you may experience some cramping. After the radiologist checks the images, you will be allowed to go to the rest room. The procedure will take about 30 to 50 minutes.
